I don’t know why Kagi would be shilled in the Privacy community when they don’t seem to actually understand privacy… They claim to be privacy focused out of one side of their mouth, while asking for more and more information from the user to allow their AI features to work out of the other side. They apparently resolve this in their own head by just claiming that any information you voluntarily give to them isn’t private information.

The joke:

I hear what you are saying, and in today’s climate I probably wouldn’t strongly disagree… But I would much rather there be a crowd-sourced exchange of services training AI instead of completely ripping off work done by real people without any permission.

Same. And I think it is even more ridiculous when you have to rely on their hardware too. They control the hardware drivers AND the OS upstream, how do you exist if not by their permission?
I really wanna know what spooky is. lol
Being able to download and install software from somewhere that isn’t the app store has been available the entire time, it is not “new”. I remember downloading .apk files and installing them on my first android phone, and it just worked. It wasn’t until my 3rd or 4th phone that you had to start enabling “unknown sources” to install a .apk, and they have been working to make it harder ever since.

Everyone I knew with a PS1 had a mod chip in it to play copied games. Cracks and CD-keys for PC games were everywhere online. It was dummy easy to do even before Napster or Kazaa, but those things definitely accelerated it. I remember people in college having pirated copies of photoshop, mathematica, and autocad because they needed them for classes and didn’t have $600-$1000 to shell out on software on top of books - I know that isn’t games, but the principle of pirating them was pretty similar at the time.

Yea, calling it all torrenting, when referring to an era before torrents even existed is wild. Dude is making up their own language about it at this point.

‘I violated every principle I was given
And…

if you know a dragon’s true name, you have control over it.
I thought that was Devils??

I’ve tried it a few times, and like… it’s frustrating because I can get so close, but the missing bit feels like an impenetrable wall. Like, I can occasionally make something, but it isn’t anywhere near as nice of a model/part and it takes significantly longer to do. I tend to try it out again once every several months to see if new stuff makes it easier for me to use, but so far it hasn’t been a great solution for me.

Can you link what you are talking about for Fusion360 by chance? I’ve tried repeatedly and it always seems to be broken at the part where it wants to open a web browser so you can log in… I ended up running Fusion in WinBoat, but it just isn’t as performant so I would love a Wine solution instead.

I don’t get it. What even is Arc browser, is that the conspiracy equivalent?

Eat a nickel.

Maybe they meant the Linux mascot, the duck named Dux right?

I believe the entire goal of RepRap was to build a machine that could build all the parts needed to build another machine. Most of the parts for a lot of machines are either 3d printable or bog-standard off-the-shelf parts that could be used for millions of other things. I have a feeling the really scary target would be software, something similar to the draconian age-verification BS being run around.

I don’t understand.
That’s obvious.
I still have PTSD related flashbacks to working at geek squad when the stupid fucking dinosaur cursors (absolutely chockablock with viruses) were all the rage… I use the default one build into KDE.
