I’m talking more about serial killers, serial rapists, repeat violent offenders etc. who do not respond to rehabilitation after ample opportunities. Death penalty cannot be more expensive than incarcerating people for decades. All that you need for capital punishment is a tough piece of rope and gravity. But if you want to use more humane methods, voluntary euthanasia costs in Switzerland are about $13k, which is far less than housing someone in a maximum security prison for even one year.

Doing nothing to prevent this type of migration is handing free votes to entities like AfD in Germany and Marine Le Pen in France. If more moderate politicians cannot find reasonable solutions, then people will vote for more extreme options (leaning more towards the far-right than the far-left), and this only serves to destabilize Europe. The billionaire problem in Europe is not comparable to the one in the US. The bottom 50% still hold a lot of wealth in Europe while in the US the 1% are more wealthy than the entire middle class.

I’m warming up to the death penalty. Not for any specific crime necessarily, but some individuals are just beyond repair or rehabilitation.

I think Romania also had to do this.

If they block the sanctions, they will be called genocide supporters. If they don’t block them, then they’ll be called antisemitic. Considering they have a lot of guilt from the past vis a vis antisemitism, this makes it a politically difficult choice.
