Gridiron football fields have two rows of hash marks (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hash_mark_%28sports%29). Each play begins somewhere on or between the hash marks. Plays very rarely begin along the centerline of the field.

Also, goal posts aren’t very thick. There’s a reason you can rip them down and carry them out of the stadium fairly easily.
