We are post scarcity. From a technology viewpoint, it would be trivially easy to produce enough to give everybody a good standard of life. The only obstacles are political.

The Federation manages everything it does without being a post-scarcity economy too. Dilithium is a scarce resource and they need it to power their replicators.

We don’t need them to start making a better world. The federation didn’t have them in the beginning either.
If we’re going to follow the same path, they did in fact have a massive global war that wiped a good chunk of the world population.
