I was thinking of pulling and running away but yours is better. You are either among the saved, or if your attempt was unsuccessful, you dont have to deal with that either.
You just need to save their life and run away before they have the chance to thank you. Seems to work for a lot of superheros, Maybe spiderman has a lot of social anxiety and thats why nobody can ever get a pic with him.

I would save their lives, but only under the promise that no one is to make eye contact or thank me later. If anyone does, they get tied back down to the tracks again and have to wait for the next person to walk by the switch as a trolley approaches
