Explanation: Both France and Germany (especially in the form of Prussia) put a… high value fighting over the culturally-mixed area of Alsace-Lorraine. Notably, the annexation of Alsace-Lorraine from France was a key event in the unification of Germany by Prussia; while France nursed the grudge over losing Alsace-Lorraine for some 40 years, culminating in France retaking Alsace-Lorraine in WW1. Nazi Germany would briefly re-seize Alsace-Lorraine from France during WW2, but that would be reversed by Nazi Germany’s eventual defeat.

Elsaß Frei!
France gets Alsace, Germany gets Lorraine, easy.
How about shared custody? Germany gets Alsace-Lorraine for one week, then France gets it for one week and so on. It’s fair and ensures that the region gets to spend time with both countries, which might be important for its development.
With the EU in place, one could attempt something like that.
With the EU in place it could be its own thing
