At least once a week when I’m having a meal with my parents they’ll comment on how the portions are smaller, it tastes worse or it’s more expensive than when they were kids (about 30-40 years).
They’ll talk about how nothing’s cheap these days, another business shutting down and how it’s so hard for people to get jobs now.
My dad will say multiple times a week how people are fucked in the head by drugs and mental illness without the asylums. Then he’ll say it’s too dangerous for me to go into town like he did back in the day because of these people.
My Grandad once or twice a month will lament how antisocial people are. He’ll mention going on a bike ride and greeting 10 people that past him and less than half respond. The women look at the 80 year old with fear. My dad will go “no shit Sherlock”
I don’t know it seems my family doesn’t have a lot of hopes for the future and it makes me very anxious. When I tell them my concerns for my future and how I wish I was born in more prosperous times they act confused. It annoys me.
Not really, no. But most people I know worry about the rise of populism and fascism and things like climate change and war.
I tell my mom not to save in dollars and start investing in land and gold, my mom tells me how dangerous things are getting in my native country, but that’s it. I do talk with my wife often about moving out of the UK eventually though, as a Western financial collapse will only make the white supremacist rightoids angrier and more dangerous and our brown/black Muslim asses will certainly be the first ones targeted/scapegoated. Thankfully we’re “comfortable” or at least “not broke” so we might be bouncing in 5-7 years without too much trouble, if I find a decent job abroad.
