Looks like the bulk of these is caused by cheap poorly made ebikes, and improper disposal of lithium ion batteries from smaller devices.

“researchers found that ebike fires made up nearly a third of all lithium-ion battery fires nationally and noted that retrofitted and converted ebikes appeared to be disproportionately involved compared with certified models.”

There’s a terrible influx of badly made cells and battery packs of all shapes it seems. There needs to be more regulation.

Reminds me of the “hoverboard” craze where the electric skateboards with cheap batteries were flooding the market.

I’m not surprised. Have you seen what they’re charging for the batteries? We had to buy a new one for our e-bike and it came to about £600. Just for the battery.

then you quote only nearly a third. Hardly the bulk.
