    Tbf, many still use him as a simple flag for stoner comedy genre films, enjoyed occasionally by many but exclusively by few.

    It’s not an accurate flag any longer but if you’ve used it for more than a decade, how would you know?

        Forgive my delay.

        I think the earliest work where I noticed he had range beyond bro-comedy was Take This Waltz (2011, Polley). From what I’ve read, the actual first was 50/50 (2011, Levine) but I wasn’t in the mood for that kind of story at the time.

        That said, most would probably point to his role as Woz opposite Fassbender in Steve Jobs (2015, Boyle, Sorkin) as his true “I can do serious stuff too” flex, since it was a high budget prestige biopic with a bunch of a-listers behind the camera and a broad departure from his ‘00s genre film classics.
