For that I recommend “mindless noodling” Set a metronome (important!!) Then set your fingers on the fretboard and just start playing notes in time with the metronome.

    You can start just doing E: 1-2-3-4 A: ————-1-2-3-4 D: —————————1-2-3-4 G: —————————————-1-2-3-4

And then back down the same way. What you’re looking for is each note is on time and the same intensity.

It’s easy to do and genuinely helps.

After a set, move to a different position but play the same shapes. You can also move from 1-2-3-4 to something else, like 4-1-2-3 or whatever.

Tinkered with bass when I was a kid - it was my dad’s. Been so long since I did but, now I have my own many many years later :) It is a joy to get involved with a musical instrument no matter when! And we all start from the beginning.

I have to say that small starting point like you have shared is a great example! A slap bass tutorial I saw earlier today compares it to wax on, wax off, from The Karate Kid.
