Control should indeed have sold more. I only have it a try last year when the full bundle was 10 bucks or something after seeing a game analysis and a snippet of the ashtray maze. It is so incredibly good, can recommend everyone give it a try. Very hyped for Resonant whenever that hits Steam.
I loved the worldbuilding and atmosphere, but hated the difficulty. I soldiered through it because I wanted to see what would happen next. They fixed it with adjustable difficulty a year after it came out.

It took me a couple tries but Control eventually sucked me in. Such a slick and satisfying game.
agreed. such a universe in there
ehhhh should have is a strong word. That game is like 90% worldbuilding. The actual gameplay was mid to frankly bad, and Jesse’s personal story wasn’t nearly as interesting The Oldest House.
Maybe it’s rose-tinted glasses, I certainly haven’t gone back to them recently, but I remember Max Payne being a fun shooter. It’s kinda wild that Remedy’s gameplay has been the weakest link in everything they’ve made since.
Max Payne does still hold up. I disagree on gameplay in Control though, I thought there was plenty of action and the action was good. I do agree though that Jesse was a fairly weak protagonist. The focus is clearly on the Oldest House, and they wanted a straight man lead to contrast with the weirdness, but to me it didn’t quite work as they ended up with a protagonist that wasn’t all that compelling. I still loved the world building.
Also, Alan Wake 2 is a very competent survival horror mechanically. Remedy can do really good gameplay. Hell, even Quantum Break was alright gameplay wise, despite mostly being a dress rehearsal for Control.
If you think the gameplay was good, then I have to ask what mod setup did your gun have? do you even remember the gun modding system?
I feel like when people think of the gameplay they always remember the fun moment where you’re running through an MC Escher painting with Finnish rock blaring in the background, and not the 40 identical looking combat arenas where you throw rocks at bullet sponges with very little variety. The gunplay just is not there, and the weird gun modding system felt like it was subtractive to the experience.
I haven’t played Alan Wake 2, but 1 also felt incredibly bullet spongey with low feedback and a surprising lack of enemy variety.
I think the only weapon I didn’t use a lot was the Shatter, the shotgun one. Grip, Pierce and Spin I was all using a lot. And both grenade launchers were fun, I prefer the one from the AWE DLC though.
As far as powers go I probably used the shield the most, even though I also did use telekinesis a lot, not the least to heal. I also liked the slam dash.
EDIT: if you mean the mod system as in putting on extra +X% Rate of Fire or Headshot Damage or Explosion Radius or whatever on weapons then yeah that was medium. But it’s just a progression system. And there is some customisation there, like going for headshot damage if you’re confident in your aim and other bonuses if you’re not etc. I didn’t find it anything worth being upset about.
inb4 control live service game…fml
You mean fbc firebreak, their live service game which already got its final update 9 months after it launched?
Gonna be honest, didn’t even know that was a thing lmao
