Just got out of it. I believe I enjoyed it. It definitely felt like it’s own thing, while still being very recognizable to anyone who knows the “source material” if you can call it that.
I think it also was able to avoid most of the baggage the whole backrooms/liminal space memes have at this point. That being said…
Spoiler
I think I was enjoying the film way more before it became a mental health allegory. I don’t know where else they could have taken the story, but I really enjoyed how much the backrooms “clashed” with reality.
Making it a less “real” space made it kind of predictable. But I admit it’s a nitpick.
I am very torn on the pirate monster. On one hand, I’m happy there was something there so “creepypasta”. I immediately thought of Candle Cove, and Channel Zero, which I think is a good thing.
But on the other hand, it is a giant spooky pirate.
It was fine, I would have liked it to lean more into the weirder side of the liminal spaces, and I was expecting it would focus more on the organisation exploring the backrooms. Overall I don’t regret seeing it at the theatre but it was pretty mid.
