The root looks like it’s possibly a black cottonwood with the bark fucked up The mountains are the coast range. Source, I very likely live in the zone the photo was taken.

If I was gonna pull a random place outta my ass, I’d guess the desolation sound area. Google image search will show you lots of similar looking country.
