I struggle to understand how Republican congressmen can make this decision to override their “leadership” when he wants to aid and abet the enemy, but not decide to get rid of him for aiding and abetting the enemy

Actually removing him from office falls to the senate rather than to congress, and it requires a two-thirds supermajority of senate. That was what prevented him from being removed each time he was impeached - congress impeached him, senate did nothing

Congress is both of them together, the House and the Senate. so yes while Congress did impeach him, Congress also did not remove him 🙃
