Nope although it took some time for things around the october surprise and iran contra to come out enough and even more time for me to get it. Nixon is before my time and it took awhile to really get why people hated him. At that time it seemed like we were doing two steps forward and one back and I did not realize that all our forward was generally coming by the sacrifice of future steps forward. I still feel we were generally making progress until citizens united which pretty much sunk us.
yeah and it was like the late 90’s and aughts were things were done that looked good but folks, like myself, did not realize how badly they were. I was part of a student group that started recycling at my initial college and we basically took the profit from metal to subsidize the plastic recycling with paper and glass being pretty neutral. This was with students doing the work and having seperate canisters for different types of recycling. I remember when the blue bin became big it was like. Huh. Will that work. Initially the drivers were sorting at pickup time into different areas so like ok. I actually think at that point the systems were being set up pretty legitamately but I think quickly it was found china would take it all and the messaging to homes was you could put more and more things in the recycling. Recycle everything message. It did not matter because china would take it all. Then china stopped and all of a sudden they were not longer seperating at pickup and there was way to many things being put in for domestic recycling at the homes. Plus the businesses were used to easy profit over difficult to make a modest profit. Messaging went out about recycling limitations but it did not get around as fast as the throw everything with a recycling symbol in and then some. Now its all picked up like garbage and I think most of it ends up in landfill with a bit of token recycling happening. I mean like even if you were in the no it was hard to see how this was evolving.
I didn’t. Generally thought we were doing better as time went by until the late 90’s.
Apparently kids today are less oblivious.

The 70s and 80s were when public understanding of our precarious environmental situation really took hold.
