Explanation: Theodore Roosevelt was a president of the USA and a… colorful character. All his life he spent gleefully seeking danger, much of it legitimate, and vocally enjoying himself all the while. During the Spanish-American War, he resigned his comfy position in the Federal government for the opportunity to lead a field command in Cuba, where he served with legitimate bravery. He became president a few years afterwards, and served two terms before being replaced.
When WW1 broke out, he was no longer president, but he still advocated for the US to join the war on the side of the (slightly more democratic) Triple Entente, despite the general reluctance of the American electorate to get involved in ‘foreign affairs’. When the USA did join WW1 in 1917 over the issue of Imperial German submarine warfare, he was overjoyed, and encouraged his sons to join the war effort. For that matter, he himself volunteered, begging the highest echelons of the American government to be allowed to meet his end in the trenches, despite being too old to be accepted under ordinary circumstances (General Pershing, a fellow veteran who fought with him in Cuba, accepted; but was overruled by President Woodrow Wilson).
… but the glee at the MANLY DANGERS of a RIGHTEOUS (in his mind) CAUSE conflicted with the terror over the prospect that his boys, his sons whom he loved very dearly, might be killed in the process. His own life he would sign away without a second thought; but the danger to his sons haunted him. All four of his sons served in WW1 - and one of them, the youngest, would die, devastating Roosevelt.
C’est la guerre.
It’s not the first time I comment under one of these Roosevelt’s post, but I’m pretty sure that you did recommend a book about him, which I can’t remember
T.R.: The Last Romantic by H.W. Brands?
Yep, that was the one, thanks
Wasn’t me! I copied (and noted the context was from the original OP) a section from TR: The Last Romantic on two other Roosevelt posts, but I haven’t read the book myself, I’m afraid!
TR is my favorite US president by far. He was a man of high moral integrity. Idealistic and eager for a fight, if he believed he was on the right side of it. Qualities that can be good in moderation but can unfortunately also bite you in the keister if unrestrained. And he did get bit a few times.
