When using https://search.fabiomanganiello.com/search to web search, Reddit links were previously replaced with a liberating front-end which I think was run by the same person. At some point, that was dropped and we now get direct Reddit links. It sucks but at least reddit was functional. No longer. Today my search led to a thread that I had just a couple minutes to read before Reddit pushed a /members only/ block screen.

Circumvention attempts:

  • overlay remover extension – has no effect
  • torsocks lynx reddit.com/yadayada – blank screen
  • torsocks elinks reddit.com/yadayada – blank screen
  • archive.org – I got lucky… IAWM happened to have archived the article I needed. Cannot generally rely on this though.
  • teddit – Ted is dead… see below

Codeberg becomes tor-hostile? Microsoft Github more inclusive?

There is teddit, which is likely the 3rd party frontend that enabled free-world access to Reddit content. To get info on Teddit, I tried to visit the Codeberg project. “Access denied”. WTF? So then I go to Microsoft’s repo. Microsoft gives the Tor community access but Codeberg does not.

The MS-hosted Teddit repo lists instances but all are dead apart from some Cloudflare instances which I don’t care to enter. Did Reddit do something to sabotage Teddit?

    The Codeberg repo also loads fine for me over Tor. It’s likely your particular exit node was just IP banned due to abuse; worth rotating circuits a few times before concluding all of Tor is blocked.

    It was blocked throughout the day. And also today. Circuits naturally go stale relatively quick so it would be different exits that I visited from. Perhaps you got lucky and got a new exit node that was not yet cataloged by Codeberg’s firewall.

      Hmm, I’ve also just tried a few different circuits (exits across Europe and the US) and haven’t hit any blocking. This is with a stock TorBrowser install, maybe you have some extensions or other config that’s getting picked up? Or it might have been a temporary measure from Codeberg’s side that’s since been turned off?
