It is common for an abuser to take away a victim’s phone, shoes, car keys, medication, etc in order to control them and make it difficult for them to leave.

Admittedly anecdotal I can’t give you proper statistics to back this up but I am close to someone who’s career involves working with people in vulnerable situations like this and this seems to be an unfortunate reality for more people than you might think.
