Italy never managed to build a bridge to Sicilia.
They’re sort of working on it. But a (world record) 3.6km long suspension bridge over notoriously rough waters is not an easy feat. Also, they have massive issues with corruption in their construction companies (a little thing called Mafia).
Just bend the knee a bit so the boot touches the other side.

Or dump a bunch of dirt to create a land bridge.
Call the new body of water Mediterranian Jr.
Just wait a few thousands years and Po will just fill the entire thing.
Could probably just keep calling it the Adriatic Sea.
