Cease and desist
On 24 August 2026 cease and desist letters have been sent by X Corp. demanding a permanent takedown of Nitter instances and the project’s repository.
nitter.net is offline and development has stopped for the time being. I’m seeking legal advice and won’t be commenting further on the specifics for now.
Thank you to everyone who used, hosted, packaged, donated and contributed to Nitter over the past seven years.

I hate the fact that Elon musk took what was a quick easy way for people to get messages out quickly to the public, and then put it behind a login wall to force people to make an account on his site just to get information from organisations. The first thing the site does is serve you far right propaganda when you log in.
And then he saw people creating a way around that and shut that down.
Fuck Elon Musk.
Everyone seems to be doing this now, too. Needing accounts to access services isn’t new, but since apps came along, everyone seems to suddenly need your birth certificate and your home address align with the schedule of your bowel movements.
