So here’s an alternative for people who don’t like Youtube

Consistently uninterested in game previews built by companies selling the games. I never find them to be accurate representations of gameplay.

For me GTA peaked with the originals in 1997-1999 and had a nice little comeback in 2013. Hyperreality is not what I need in games…

The problem is that when graphics become to realistic, you enter the uncanny valley, which makes things seem off.

IME it’s better when they (slightly) stylise the graphics, which makes the game look less realistic, but you weirdly end up noticing it less.

I grew up largely in the PS1 era and have a nostalgia for the affine texture warping. I’m not going to necessarily defend it as good in its own right, but I think a lot of older games play into that same “temporary suspension of disbelief” we get with movies. When something is less realistic, we are forced to invest more of our own imagination into it, an I believe that in a lot of ways this can form a stronger connection. You see this a lot with the whole analog horror trope, it’s the fear of the things hidden between the pixels that you’re not seeing and lets your imagination run wild.

Striving for realism only has one of two results: success of failure. Success is hard, and the numerous, subtle failures pile up until it distracts you and separates you from the illusion it’s trying to achieve.

To preface, I’m not a GTA player at all, but I felt confused coming out of watching this. Like, It looks really good, but something about how canned the gameplay itself was, threw me off. It was too clean, like, throw in a couple of missed shots with the guns at least. Have the player not predict where every enemy is. I wanted to see ACTUAL gameplay, not hyper scripted, perfected gameplay. I know this is the same with a lot of preview gameplay, it might be in engine, but it doesn’t give me a real sense of what it would look like in my hands. It always gives me a vibe of what are they trying to hide. My guess in this case is the lower than expected frame rates. Camera movements felt slow and deliberate, a common way to hide frame drops.

Otherwise I think there are a lot of systems going on, and this is going to be one hell of a sandbox game, but I want to see the real thing before even considering playing it.

what? are they also replacing invidious links with youtube links, inserting their own “si=” parameter to be even more “nonpirate”?

Wasn’t this the thing they told everyone to subscribe to Netflix to see? Now all those people subscribed and they just tweeted it out?

Rockstar and Take Two are such a fucking joke, why do you guys give them any of your time or money? This game is gonna be a huge disappointment and I haven’t even watched the trailer

Am I the only one thinking that glorifying gangsters and guns can’t be good for society ?

Not only video games and certainly not video games for everything. I played my fair share of SHMUP and other kind of violent games. But this one really looks like a movie, I can really imagine kids identifying to the protagonists and reproducing that IRL. I wouldn’t want to forbid it but still it disturbs me. I’m wondering.

Cinematography is here for a century already. What amount of crimes is done because “Cool! I want to be like that guy with a gun”? I suppose a dozen in total during that whole century.

If you want to go there : All US action movies have a gun displayed on their poster. The US is number one in gun homicide from a very, very wide margin. You can always say it’s not linked. Other countries think it is.

Not the poster by themselves, but that means that for any US action movies, the hero is identified as a person with a gun. The gun is kinda the symbol of its power.

One such movie from time to time is perfectly OK. When all of them glorify guns, you have a cultural problem.
