Canada@lemmy.ca•Prime minister should be required to divest assets, says committeeEnglish
9·27 days agoIt’s insuffient because …
" … the prime minister, as a reporting public office holder, is fully divested from their controlled assets through sale, since placement in a blind trust does not constitute true divestment."
The committe is also advising revisions that will affect other officials and cabinet ministers …
The committee also wants the law amended to require public disclosure of “high-level holdings categories placed in a blind trust by reporting public office holders (sector/asset class, and whether the holdings are Canadian-market concentrated),” a recommendation that could shed new light on the financial interests of a number of top officials and cabinet ministers.
It’s all in the very short article link.

Canada@lemmy.ca•‘A well-known secret’: inside Toronto’s violent tow truck warsEnglish
8·28 days agoToronto has a long history with the turf wars and cops have been involved since the beginning.
Police were also involved in the matter, and not in a crime-solving sort of way. Suspected involvement stretches back to 2007 when four officers were disciplined for mishandling road collisions, having been accused of requiring vehicles to be towed and handing off the tows to agencies not on the department’s list of approved vendors (note that this was before the first available method was used.)
The following source is a great place to read about how and why it began.

27·30 days agoI disagree. I like that Avi is moving the party further left because that’s where they were for years, and we’ve already got a centrist party (the Liberals). We need another centrist party like we need another hole in our heads.
For too long Canada has been sliding downward, forgetting our deep social democracy roots. We need to get back at least some of what we’ve lost.
