Never had a fitgirl install fail. Make sure your download was complete and not corrupted or missing required files. And make sure you have enough RAM not including swap. Some of these games use pretty heavy compression that uses a whole lot of RAM. And it seems swap sometimes causes the decompression to fail. Not sure why though.

But thankfully on most modern distros you can use something like Synaptic or another package manager. Or just use an installer like on windows. Usually a .deb or .rpm file depending on distro.
