I assume this will result in a slap on the wrist and maybe some lawyers will make a bunch of money but the people harmed will get like a dollar and Meta will view this as the ‘cost of doing business’ and just harder to not get caught next time. These types of things have to be company ending for them to keep people in line…

Lots of comments in this thread that are splitting the details. Which , fine. The underlying issue that is being broadly gestured to is consumer protection vs. corporate protections - or even more broadly just the double standards of rights for organizations vs. people ; look at the LLM piracy that occurred vs. individuals that get caught pirating. Look at the harm against children fee that meta is paying vs what happens to individuals that harm children. With consolidation of power/money consumer choice goes down and with consolidation of wealth corruption goes up leading to less choice w/less protections.

It is almost like we had something for this exact thing that was soooo very good that we forgot how bad something was … it is almost like that.

yeah , what? So their concern is that drinking water is being ‘contaminated’ by a number of drugs including abortion drugs. I am not sure how that would be happening but yeah better than trying to track people down via waste water. Strange.

Great! I hope it goes lower but also i hope people don’t take these numbers as evidence they don’t need to show up to vote. All the articles about a ‘blue wave’ make me bullish but also worried that people will check out – but maybe I am being paranoid.

My one hope with all this nonsense is that it will drive people away from centeralized products and toward more open , democratized options ( and that those options will remain excluded from these laws. )… but the world doesn’t normally go the way that I want.

Maybe these type of things will finally push people away from these platforms and toward more open / non-centeralized platforms.
