, but I don’t know why I should need to say it. What is wrong with this world?

United States | News & Politics@lemmy.ml•Maryland citizens slapped with $2 billion power grid upgrade bill for out-of-state AI data centersEnglish
10·13 days agoif you are in the market to build a datacenter, you should probably build out as near to a reliable power source to begin with. While I see some promise in smaller local models for various purposes, I do not see any benefit of anything that would require one new data center, let alone what ever they have “planned”.
Also a promise involving Trump is worth about as much as a backed up sewer.

Linux@lemmy.ml•How good do blu-ray drives work on Linux these days?English
25·20 days agoThe drives should work fine, for standard blurays and self wrote disks. There are a mature cli utilities and often the gui version is just a frontend for the cli tools. It is just an optical drive otherwise.
Arch Linux Wiki : https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Blu-ray
Check out makemkv, which has a cli option, and their forum for compatibility for 4K blurays. Newer bluray drives have additional protection for 4K if I understood correctly.

6·25 days agoSo like the currency idea i guess. I won’t be accepting any currency with him on it. If a living person can’t be on the currency for 5 years after they died, any before that wouldn’t be legal currency. Not sure the law regarding the passport, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there are similar laws.

2·25 days agoI have a feeling they will sell out of them even at that price.
Yeah and you’d think GNU would like the recognition too.

Couldn’t they just call it IMP(Image Manipulation Program)?
I have heard it used that way in the last decade I think

Technology@lemmy.zip•Bluetooth tracker hidden in a postcard and mailed to a warship exposed its location — $5 gadget put a $585 million Dutch ship at risk for 24 hoursEnglish
1·1 month agoThat is so disturbing and amazing at the same time. Does the US Navy screen their mail for trackers? Other countries. What about the sailors as they board? There was the story about the starlink router on a ship last year I think. So …

PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•Nvidia denies report that it is in talks to acquire a major PC company but Dell, HP, Lenovo and Asus share prices jumped at the thoughtEnglish
10·1 month agoThere really isn’t any strong reason for them to do so. They already outsource manufacturing which is very flexible to needs. Apple does the same. Every PC company is using windows or linux as those are available to pretty much everyone. Patents? cheaper to just buy those. I am not seeing the hypothetical benefit.

Gaming@lemmy.zip•Stop Killing Games throw weight behind California bill that would force companies to either keep games working independently after server shutdowns or issue refundsEnglish
0·1 month ago+1. Often no reason to not push a open server option when they shutdown when they drop a game they sold. I am certain that publishers will just try to release them for free though and charge a subscription. May not be successful though.
Sure it aged well. WAY WAY BIGGER than gnu.

The gambling line for me would be “Does it cost me financially” to do it or is an option. If I just have to play again, then it isn’t. It could be gambling-like, for example Balatro, but that isn’t actually gambling.
