World News@quokk.au•Canada: Senate bill proposes giving Ottawa the power to confiscate Russian state assets
3·9 days agoI guess we can reasonably assume that by “Ottawa” - Canada’s political center with headquarters of the federal government - they mean the Canadian government. So, yes, the bill is aimed to confiscate Russian assets not just in Ottawa but everywhere in Canada.

7·12 days agoIn 2023, Canada passed a motion to resettle 10,000 Uyghurs and other Turkic muslims from China by the end of 2026. Since the Canada-China trade deal has been finalized, the Carney government has not yet said whether or not it feels committed to it, though.

Global News@lemmy.zip•[Opinion] Uyghur Forced Labor Imports From China To Canada Must Be BlockedEnglish
3·12 days agoAs an addition:
Beijing was denying the existence of what is commonly referred to as ‘labour camps’ in East Turkestan, known in China as Xinjiang, for many years.
In September 2018, a report by the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (opens pdf) estimated the numbers detained in Xinjiang – back then, between tens of thousands and a million.
One month later, the Chinese government acknowledged the existence of what it then called “vocational training centres” - and justified them as necessary to counter “terrorism” and “extremism”.
Meanwhile, there is ample evidence of forced labour schemes in East Turkestan / Xinjiang and across China.
In 2021, for example, researchers at RAND had used satellite observations to look at detention camps that Chinese officials insisted were empty.
In 2024, Human Rights Watch published a report, Asleep at the Wheel: Car Companies’ Complicity in Forced Labor in China, that shows how Chinese and foreign car companies exploit forced labour in Xinjiang. As one result, German carmaker Volkswagen divested from its Chinese joint venture to comply with EU rules.
You’ll find much more across the web.

31·16 days ago“We are demonstrating not just the strength of our values in defending a rules-based international order, but also the value of our strength," he [Carney] added.

11·16 days agoAt the end of the day if it makes Carney look weak as he bows to the dictator, and it is bad for Taiwanese and far beyond their country’s borders, including for Canada and Canadians.
This is blatant political interference into Canadian politics, and the Canadian government remains silent by now.

You may not be shocked to hear that it was Canada.31·20 days agoUnless they don’t do some A/B testing, the original title is, “The f-words are everywhere in Santa Marta.”
And it’s not that the US, China, Russia, and 130 or so other countries weren’t invited to Colombia, but they refused to join. They are apparently not interested to phase out fossil fuels.
