  • ?? What do you mean how is it better to agree to the price before hand? That cannot be a serious question. If it’s too expensive at least you know ahead of time and can just not accept. You cannot be scammed by a driver going around in circles and increasing the price when you’ve already paid. In a taxi, you can. Uber/Bolt are objectively better in this regard, there is no point denying it and expecting to be taken seriously. Even my old parents who can barely use tech prefer to use Uber for that reason.

It’s an outdated system and one of the two main reason they are dying in so many places. The other is service quality - never heard of a cab you can call with an app where it shows you how far it is and how long you have. At least where I live, you have to call for one and just hope they show up.

  • It’s still miles better than Cabs, I can’t believe this even has to be argued! When was the last time anyone here defending cabs/shitting on Uber actually took a cab somewhere?

The few times I had to/decided to take a taxi, I got absolutely ripped off. And with an Uber, even if it’s expensive, you at least know before hand how much you’re paying. You can decline if you think it’s too much. Good luck trying that with taxis.

  • The reason breeding is bad for the environment, is because of the impact the average person has on climate. If we lived sustainable lives, breeding would not have that much of an impact.

If you try to live a sustainable life to the best of your abilities, and you instill that same mindset and way of living onto your kids, it’s perfectly fine to have kids.

But if you’re going to drive giant trucks powered by oil, eat red meat every day with a glass of milk, use and abuse plastic for everything, and be a massive consumerist, then sure; having kids is terrible for the environment because they will probably also do all of that.

  • Even before we get to nuclear disposal places, there are reactors which can literally use the waste from other reactors, producing more energy and reducing the waste. And once it cannot be reused anymore, it can be safely stored underground, which you cannot do with the waste from fossil fuels. Do you have working solutions for carbon emissions? Because renewables still cannot keep up with the demand, and everyone will tell you need something other than them to jump start grids, base load, and for emergencies.

And yes, it’s vibes. Factually, nuclear is safer than all renewables, except solar. This is a blatant mathematical and statistical fact. I can also link to plane crashes. Are you going to cry to me about how they are more dangerous than cars? And Chernobyl happened very early in nuclear energy production technology, we have improved a lot since, and even the most recent accidents were on plants that have existed for a while.

Where do you think the materials to build renewables come from? Mines. Did you know mines are radioactive, and release radioactive which is not contained? So newsflash: not just coal, but even iron mines release radioactivity due to trace amounts of radioactive material. This radioactivity is not contained. And given how there are people in there, and they are often close to civilization, they are even worse for people than nuclear waste disposal sites which are deep underground and where almost no one goes.

You are ignorant. Period, end of. I’m tired of hearing ignorant and anti-science people spreading missinfo while pretending to care about science and facts. Climate scientists have literally been advocating for nuclear as a green alternative.

  • I’m gonna remember this thread for the next time everyone starts going on about how:

“The average person is doing the best they can! Climate change is all the government’s and corporation’s fault, we literally can’t do anything!”

Meanwhile, a post on a vegan community got several people to go out of their way to talk about how cool they are for eating meat. And they got upvoted for it too!

    Reminder that:

    • meat production is one of the largest producers of CO2 (beef is the biggest, and pork after that)

    • most greens are cheaper than meat, pretty much everywhere

    • the average person in a western country is typically overweight

“But there’s nothing we can do! Don’t you see? It’s the governments and corporations who have to take action and force me to stop eating meat/insert-other-thing-I-can-do-but-choose-not-to-here! Also, vote for Biden/a-centrist-from-your-country!”
