24·13 days agoWhat flavor do you want your surveillance state? We’ve got ‘child protection’, ‘terrorists’ and ‘crime prevention’!
I didn’t want to trivialize the problems with switching to greener alternatives; I just wanted to say that we don’t need some ‘future tech’ to get it done. All we need is what is already known and implemented somewhere in the world.
Also building more nuclear facilities - without any groundbreaking new improvements - is more expensive than the alternative.

6·16 days agoAI is one of those buzzwords that can make your company look more valuable. So everyone includes it, weather it’s useful or not.
And it’s so easy: you use text somewhere in your application? Send it to a LLM together with a prompt and voila - you now have AI in your system. Bam. +200% market value.
Of course I exaggerated a bit, but a lot of people see it like that.
Well, nuclear power, at least for now, is quite expensive. As long as no new technological breakthrough comes along, it’s simply cheaper to use wind and solar as main power producers. Of course, this has its own problem in the form of power storage, but at least we already have the technology for this.

31·26 days agoEver wondered how cult members end up being brainwashed? It’s just a more extreme version of the ‘normal’ propaganda we consume every day.
You are part of a group.
Your group wants you to think alike.
Conform to the group.
We read about cult members blindly following their leader and turn around, thinking ‘this could never happen to me’ . As if we all have not the same psychological weaknesses like they do. As if all media is not constantly feeding us how life should be lived, according to those in power.
Oh, capitalism created tons of things that would not exist without it, like student debt, subprime mortgages, for-profit prisons… just think about all we would lose!
The people who could do something are paid off by the businesses who don’t want to save the environment.
I always loved the saying, “The ‘S’ in IoT stands for security.”

10·1 month agoI’d swap EA and Ubi. EA is as bad as Ubi AND has the tendency to take beloved franchises and kill them. Definitely Chaotic Evil. A tumor on the games industry.
There are also women in the Epstein files who helped him and suffered no consequences. Equality!
I have a similar story, but I have to give a bit of background first:
I was on a LARP once, that played in a post apocalyptic world where the Russians had taken over the area. We were playing as a resistance cell, secretly undermining their rule. Propaganda leaflets, secret meetings, sabotage, assassinations, covert actions, attacks, … Fun times.
Anyway, to enter the LARP you had to go through a Russian checkpoint. That was the first thing any character had to do. The ‘guards’ harassed you a bit, you had to go through insane bureaucracy, standing in line… It kind of set the tone for the whole event. Well, there was my friend, playing in the same resistance cell as me, going through the checkpoint.
The guard asks for his papers. My friend grabs something from his pocket and gives it to the guard. It wasn’t his identification paper, it was a resistance propaganda leaflet we made for the event. He had taken it from the wrong pocket. He was executed soon after.
It wasn’t that bad, of course. He changed clothes and returned as an other member of the resistance, but that was probably the quickest ‘start to death’ in any LARP.
Well, if you ignore the ‘ick’-factor, there are two reasons to forbid incest: genetic problems with inbreeding and the power dynamics.
Genetic problems can’t happen in a gay relationship.
Power dynamics are also not a problem, since they both didn’t know about it.
So all-in-all not that problematic?

When everything had long loading times (and we still have them from time to time) there was a genius idea : minigames on the loading screen to pass the time.
ONE company did this, patented the concept and till then no one is allowed to do that.
