  • I’m actually curious about the answer. Some back of the napkin math (aka take it with a grain of salt), it looks like ~100,000 could be housed in a rapid rehousing / temporary housing structure or ~40,000 in permanent supportive housing but the number is super variable based on location. Like are we talking housing them in NY, LA, SF or like rural West Virginia, Mississippi, Oklahoma? Also if one were to buy out whole homes for like $400,000 to give to the individual homeless then it’s like 2,125 people, although I doubt anyone is suggesting that. Irl probably 10,000 to 20,000 after a large sum of the money has leaked out due to overcharging and corruption.

  • With what seems like millions upon millions of copyright infringements, seems like more than enough for a serious firm to take on. With some major copyright owners on board I don’t think it would be as David and Goliath as you’re making it out to be. I wouldn’t be surprised to see one of these cases come to pass when these labs actually become profitable. I haven’t heard any pushback on copyright for AI labs in other countries so far so it seems to be a uniquely western complaint although I’m more than happy to be proved incorrect. I honestly have no clue how copyright is managed in Israel, India, or China.

  • Seems easy enough to prove with a court order. Short of that though I’ve seen people get models to perfectly complete content inferring that information is in there somewhere or at minimum the model is willing to go fetch that information breaching copyright. I am still curious if this is an issue in AI labs elsewhere or if it’s primarily a US / UK issue.

  • I just meant the topic of cancer which seemed to be a focus. Also I’ve noticed a continual jump between power plants and stoves or other gas household appliances. You are right though that geography and wind patterns definitely play a role. If a buffer zone didn’t matter that would mean one could put a gas fired powerplant on the other side of the earth and they would be at the same health risk as if they were camped out feet away from the exhaust which simply isn’t true. There’s some degree of distance where the effects become negligible. Generally speaking though no one wants to live near power generation of nearly any sort or high power lines which have their own issues.

I don’t think anyone is advocating for us to go back to a time before electricity. PV, solar thermal, hydro, geo thermal, and wind are good, some depending on how they store power, ultimately nuclear is the king and hopefully one day fusion will come around to solve the issue once and for all. Maybe if we find a novel and efficient way of generating antimatter that would be the true ultimate. Coal and gas still have a role to play in many areas not well suited for greener energy and where people get the heeby geebys about nuclear. It does cost more but that could generally be managed by government subsidies.

  • There could be a class action lawsuit. I wonder how other major players in AI are managing this, particularly labs in China, Israel, UK, Singapore, and India. Of course each nation had its own laws around copyright. Like isn’t there an equal pushback like this for Chinese AI labs or is it a uniquely American or western thing?
