Who would be the defense attorney? Clarence Darrow?
The Truman Show didn’t have commercial breaks or ad reads. People in his environment may speak highly of a product (sometimes to a suspicious degree), but they only spoke to people inside the simulation. The products had to naturally fit into his environment.
Viewership would probably drop, and the product placement embedded in the show that funded the whole program would be difficult to do in jail.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•It's 2026, which tech did you realistically think we would have by now?
0·2 months agoI thought VR/AR would be farther along. There was a pitch 10 years ago that VR would be the “final platform” in that anything a phone, TV, tablet, or computer could do could be easily emulated in VR.
Unfortunately it’s still all walled gardens. Also nobody wants to wear that shit for more than an hour.
As much as everyone loves to hate printers, the fact that a printer can grab a single sheet of paper off a huge stack even semi-reliably is more impressive to me than 14nm photolithography.
Came in here for this.
Being able to do this at all is challenging, but building something the size of a bread machine that can be operated by anyone and maintains sterility on its own is something else.

I think it’s interesting that in 2005, the internet had a ton of popups and scammy ads that told you “you just won a free iPod!” and everyone knew that was a thing. There was even a gag about it in Scary Movie 3 (2003):

Yet you don’t hear people complain about that as much today. It’s like so much of the internet has been cordoned off into walled gardens that most users don’t see pages out in the open.
Something poetic and quaint about a link to a Wikipedia article titled “Tree”

I was trying to concentrate hydrochloric acid and had it in my boiling flask on a mantle. It was taking a while and I realized I hadn’t added a stir-bar, so I tossed one in.
Then the superheated hydrochloric acid flash boiled and shot out of the flask like 8 feet in the air. Fortunately, I was outside.
