  • Also if you’re not participating in shareholders meetings, proposing resolutions and voting on them, then you’re not even really owning the stock in any meaningful way. You’re just holding a virtual piece of paper hoping the number goes up.

Don’t know if they’re still doing it but a small IBM shareholder used to annually table a motion that all payments to political parties and individuals be explained, and the board kept recommending a “No” vote.

So here’s the thing. In his prime in the early 2000s there legitimately was a liberal PC orthodoxy in comedy. This meant if you made a joke about a marginalised group it was implicitly understood that the humour was either in the outrageousness of it, or that bigotry itself was the true target of the joke, and that we weren’t supposed to take it at face value.

But then actual fascists started gaining power by campaigning against those same marginalised groups, and that type of joke stopped being possible even when played back verbatim. Gervais either hasn’t realized that, or is happy to play to the tastes of real bigots.

I used to be philosophically anti-piracy in principle, and would often argue online against people who posted disingenuous or self-serving justifications for their actions. But these days the amount of piss-taking by the publishers has destroyed my resolve.

    Yarrr.
