  • nothing to offer voters other than “At least we aren’t Trump.”

I have Democratic friends who think that this should be good enough and are pretty passionate about that. I try to tell them that it doesn’t animate most voters, but they don’t hear me. From talking to them, I get the impression that they view their party as some force of nature that just decrees who the candidate will be, and they have no power over it. I can see why they feel that way, but I don’t understand why they think that’s acceptable. Or I guess that they don’t think it’s acceptable, but they don’t think there’s anything that they can do about it. It’s learned helplessness.

  • What’s wrong with “get a hobby”? I mean, you shouldn’t get a hobby with the express purpose of hitting on people, but getting a hobby is a way to make friends, and making friends is the only way I’ve ever gotten dates. The odds that you’re going to hit on a stranger and they’re going to go out with you are abysmal. It’s like searching for a job. You can send out dozens of resumes, but they’re all going to get turned down, and when you finally do get a job, it’s through a friend or a recruiter you know.

  • It’s really easy to pump up Islamophobia, too. All you have to do is ask them why they never attack Islam, and imply it’s because they’re afraid. When Gaza was in the news, I would see a spike in anti-Muslim posts in the atheism subreddits. It’s embarrassing how long it took me to realize that the anti-Muslim stuff wasn’t there to attack ISIS or al-Qaeda. It was there to justify what was happening in Gaza.

There was even an atheist group I was a part of that had several speakers come to tell us about how horrible Muslims were, how they abused women, etc. Oh, and then we had a Jewish lady come and talk to us about how open-minded and rational Judaism is.

  • I’m not necessarily trying to convince them, though. I might be trying to convince somebody else who might come along and read the debate we’re having. My opinion has been swayed on numerous issues by arguments I read on reddit and other websites which I took no part in. In fact, it’s easier to sway third parties, because they don’t have to worry about their ego the way an interlocutor does.

  • They don’t have kompromat on our politicians. At least, I don’t see any evidence for that. What I do see evidence of is bribery. Look at all of the $$$ AIPAC gives to congress-people, and then look at how they behave towards Israel. Israel is just like any other special interest, buying our politicians.

Of course, there are some in congress who truly believe in Zionism, like Joe Biden. It’s like how we have shitty gun laws. Part of it is due to how much money the NRA spends lobbying politicians, but part of it is because some of the people in congress truly believe that it’s better when anybody can get ahold of an AR-15. Nobody thinks that the NRA is blackmailing politicians, though. I think the reason why people are willing to believe this about Israel is because it plays into antisemitic conspiracy theories.
