Hi, Ukrainian here. Kindly fuck off. If we’re going to start dick measuring contest by how much of whose land who occupied, west of Ukraine had been part of Poland and/or Austro-Hungary for most of history.
And since you’re measuring credibility by how much time one spent in Ukraine, I was born here and lived here for my entire life, including the war. So I guess my dick is longer.
The part where Ukraine took parts of other countries and, therefore, isn’t a real country. And the part where Ukrainians are hiding in their houses or else getting kidnapped by vans and sent to the frontlines.
Nobody said Ukraine wasn’t a real country. The fact that it acquired quite a lot of its current land from neighbouring countries by force - you can thank Stalin for roughly a quarter of modern-day Ukraine, including Bucovina, Transcarpathia, northern Basarabia and Snake Island - is indisputable fact; that doesn’t make it “not a real country”. It does make it frankly admirable the degree of support that Ukraine has received in its hour of need.
As for people hiding in their granny’s basement to avoid fighting - I mean that’s just objective truth. The only thing that scares a Ukrainian IT worker more than being asked to go to the front-line is being asked to pay taxes.
That people gets dragged off the street and forced into the army all over the place like in some sort of dictatorship. Pressed on the matter they’ll find some kremlin article or some mishap from 2022 (meanwhile in Russia, it happens all the time).
And a general feeling of non-democracy/fear for the state/Zelenky.
Ukrainians have shown they are very attached to democracy, over and again BTW and ate rallying behind Zelenskyy.
Not really, and I’ll grant it was a dick reply; I should be better than that. I’ll not delete it out of honesty, though.
BUT, as much as I love Ukraine dearly, it is also not the Perfect Saviour Defending Europe either, and we should frankly be realistic about that. I was in east Ukraine in 2014 when Russia invaded - and if you ask any east Ukrainian to be honest with you, they’ll tell you it really wasn’t hard to find people who welcomed the arrival of the little green men; it’s a nuanced picture. It is also undoubtedly one of the most corrupt, homophobic, racist European countries I have ever visited, with the possible exception of Serbia and Russia itself. It has histprically treated its neighbours, their people, and their land horrendously. And being blunt, most of the Reddit/Lemmy army have not been bravely fighting the good fight, they’ve been doing everything they can to avoid it for the last 4 years - the real heros are not armchair generalling on Lemmy.
All the above can be true and at the same time it can be the right thing to do to support them unwaveringly in their fight with Russia. But it does absolutely no good to bullshit and whitewash reality in the process - because one day this war will be over, and a lot of people are going to wake up one morning realising that actually, no, battle-scarred and heavily armed former Azov fighters are probably not the best neighbours in the world, and they will be backtracking wildly on promises made in haste and regretted at leisure.
Support Ukraine wholeheartedly, but not blindly. And if that really was the Russian propaganda line, I think the world would be a much better place.

Well, quite.
Good, good. How is hiding in Grandma’s basement hoping the vans don’t find you? Or did you put on a limp for a reservation?
Certainly had a lot more manual exercise, I’ll wager.
Ah, so we are repeating russian propaganda here. “Pro-Ukraine” my entire ass.
What part is russian propaganda here?
Guy just seems bitter

So fuck this piece of shite.
