Tehran (AFP) – Iran’s top diplomat insisted on Sunday that there would be no military solution to the United States’ war against the Islamic republic, with talks on ending the conflict apparently at an impasse.
A campaign of heavy bombardment failed to bring a decisive close to the war launched by the US and Israel in late February, and Washington in recent weeks has dialled back military operations in favour of economic pressure.
The main point of contention remains Iran’s attempt to blockade the Strait of Hormuz, a vital conduit for Gulf oil and gas where a UK maritime agency reported on Sunday another tanker struck by an unknown projectile.
“If our enemies again choose the path of military confrontation, our response will be stronger than before, and we will defend ourselves with even more force,” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said at a gathering of foreign ambassadors.
“There is no military solution, nor any solution based on new sanctions,” he continued, adding “only negotiations based on justice and fairness” could end the conflict.
The two sides agreed a memorandum of understanding in June that spelled out a framework for a permanent resolution, but Iranian attacks on vessels in the Hormuz prompted a return to US military operations.
Iran has sought to impose its control over the vital shipping lane since the start of the war, striking vessels that attempt to transit without its authorisation.
The US has imposed its own counterblockade of Iranian ports, and has also struck vessels it accuses of violating it.
On Sunday, the British maritime security agency UKMTO said a tanker in the Hormuz “reported being struck by an unknown projectile, causing damage to the engine room”, though the crew were reported safe and no environmental impact was recorded.
The agency did not specify the date of the incident, the vessel’s origin or destination, or whether it was an oil tanker or LNG carrier.

“There is no military solution, nor any solution based on new sanctions,” he continued, adding “only negotiations based on justice and fairness” could end the conflict.
Two concepts that are unfortunately alien to the leader of the USA and those around him.
Always have been.
The US doesn’t care whether there is a military solution. Never did. Forever war is much lucrative than bloody solutions.
America likes to suggest that Japan surrendered after America finally attacked Japanese soil, even though there was a surrender before the bombs dropped.
I would hate to think that America will continue to belligerently attack Iran until Iran brings the party home. I hope Trump’s people understand that no country has done that in 200 years.
I mean, they had to smuggle the announcement out and there was at least one attempted coup/assassination attempt (I forget which). The ones who wanted to surrender made it happen, but barely.
1- End sea blockade. 2- Unfreeze their assets for them to rebuild their country because you destroyed it in a war without reason. 3- They will not have nuclear weapons and abide by IAEA.
… that’s it, peace for the whole reigon and let the economic recovery for the whole world start including US citizens themselves.
But you know who will lose if Trump did this?
1- Israel’s hegenomy. 2-Plantir and weapon manufacturers leeching $100s of billions of US budget tax payers. 3- Shell and Exxon no longer making astronimical profits out of high prices. 4- Trump family not profitting billions out market maniuplations.
Sadly, Trump works for Israel and the Epistien class , not US citizens. So let’s face it. Trump has to be impeeched. This psycopathic egomanic cannot control his greed and never cares about any other living thing in this world but himself.
I don’t even think the weapons companies lose much if they ended the war today. The weapons we used require like 3-6 years just to get to replacement levels. The radar systems and weapon systems Iran destroyed require like 2-4 years to manufacture.
That doesn’t even count anything that has or will be “donated” to Ukraine.
attempt to blockade
Um, I thought they were being pretty damn effective with it for being an “attempt”
Realize this is a day old, but just for context there’s been a fair degree of traffic through the strait - nothing like pre-war levels, but the iranian closure of the straight has been unfortunately fairly effectively contested.
