Mainly sharing for Sadiq Khan’s I think correct take:
“Labour has lost votes in London to a variety of different parties, but the biggest change has been Labour voters switching to the Greens,” Khan said. “Without a change in course and an acceleration in delivery, the threat to Labour is existential. We risk a repeat in London, Wales and across England of what happened in Scotland, where we have still not recovered.”
People often forget that Ken Livingstone showed it was possible for Labour to lose London to a left challenger in 2000. If they think it couldn’t happen again, they’re dreaming.
Seems as is the strategy of turning Labour into Red Reform isn’t working.
Everyone involved in Labour Together should be sacked. Don’t stop with Starmer, they’re all fifth columnists.
Who would replace him? Wesley Streeting?
Honestly I can’t think of a single person left after Starmer’s purge that would be suitable.
Streeting isn’t particularly popular among Labour members compared to others in the Cabinet. And that doesn’t include other potenial candidates outside the Cabinet.
Starmer is bad at the job. There are a great many MPs who’d do a better job. Burnham and Rayner, IMO the frontrunners, would both be preferable, as would Miliband.
But are there any current MPs who can get the 20% support needed in the PLP to start a leadership contest? Starmer seems determined to not stand aside, so they’re going to have to remove him. Burnham could probably do it, but that’d require him getting back to Westminster somehow.
Well, someone’s trying, so we won’t have to wait too long to find out!
Her heart’s not in it apparently:
Well, put it this way, if 81, and I think I’m allowed to count myself, if 80 members of parliament give me their name by Monday, I think that qualifies me to go onto a list of some sort. I haven’t actually even looked at the rules because I don’t actually want to do this. I want the people who have been planning this for years to do it.
That’s how Thatcher got the Tory leadership
John McDonnell? Clive Lewis? Jess Phillips? They’re all far further left than Starmer and have national recognition.
McDonnell would be the most likely one to fully expunge Labour Together.
Wesley Streeting?
You chose one of the only people who would be demonstrably worse. Well done.
He’s the only one I’ve seen suggested would actually want the job.
