Has there ever been a chess variant with a succession mechanic ?

As in, if you get the king killed, the queen gets demoted becomes the new king, and if they both die, one of the bishops becomes king, but now you’re a theocracy and the rooks have a 10% chance each turn to betray you and attempt a coup.

    The knights are chill, though.

I’ve also seen a variant where the king isn’t (necessarily) the real king. Each player before the game secretly marks the bottom of whichever piece they want to be their actual “king” that game, and the game is won when a player captures their opponent’s marked piece. Pieces otherwise move normally though I think this mode is typically played without the rule that you just not end your turn with your king (the secret or public one) in check.

Not really what you’re describing, but there’s a game called The Duke that’s a fantastic take on chess. If you’re interested in chess it might be fun for you.
