I had that and a wedding, but no gifts were expected at either. The reason we did that is because a traditional wedding tends to be very planned and formal with not enough time to just hang out. We wanted the traditional wedding pictures and ceremony, but we had family and friends coming in from around the world just for a few days so we had a few events to see people as much as possible. I think it was well received, but again, no gifts were expected. We didn’t post a registry and told people that we just wanted them to make it.

Not really what you’re describing, but there’s a game called The Duke that’s a fantastic take on chess. If you’re interested in chess it might be fun for you.

Gotcha. If you have any experience interacting with groups that would have a chapter in most metro areas, feel free to let me know. Where I’m from originally we had some really active groups, but since moving to my current city I’m having difficulty finding something that seems to make a difference. I’d like to do mutual aid focused stuff rather than more mainstream charity work, but the charity work tends to be more impactful.

Does your group have chapters? If so, can I ask what group it is? I’ve had difficulty finding a mutual aid group that has a real impact. They do things, but the lack of structure and organization makes it seem functionally useless. The people are all pretty cool, but it mostly feels like a waste of time.

I think we’re making the same point. The comment I responded to called it a religious organization and I was making the point that it’s much more than that. Though I tried to add the caveat that even religions that don’t have full blown governments likely have stances on politics and diplomacy.

The Vatican is not a religious organization. It’s a sovereign city-state. It has territory it governs with a government and government positions. Most religions have things to say about diplomacy and politics even if they don’t have a head of state though. The issue is that Trump doesn’t like what the pope has to say.
