As far as programming goes, “i” is often used as an index parameter for loops, which is probably why it feels so natural to me to use it, reinforced with the fact that it was frequently used for series notation in my math classes. I took all the way through multivariable calculus and differential equations, but none of my coursework was heavy on complex numbers.
