Well you see, it was the Vulcans who worked with Earth to develop their tech, and Vulcans have no need for cybersecurity, since no one wants to hack a Vulcan server just to get a bunch of thesis papers on Surak’s writings and plomeek soup recipes.

I mean… most Trek was made before the Web is what it is today. Even Voyager was already off the air before XP came out.

        Has Windows ever been secure?

I just meant before most threat vectors were common knowledge. My grandma was still using a typewriter to finish her degree in the 90s when she was just in her 40s.

From a tech talk about e-mail: ‘It was a protocol designed by hippies, so it was as secure as wet paper.’

And of course I can’t find which tech talk that was, because any Google or Youtube search containing the word “e-mail” is forcibly redirected to total garbage identical to only searching the word “e-mail.” We’re gonna tell our kids there was a time search engines were borderline psychic, and they’re gonna think we’re off our meds.

Youtube 2012: “E-mail tech talk? Well we don’t have much for those exact words, but here’s a scuffed Google Video conversion with thirty views, and I guess The Website Is Down.”

Youtube 2026: “Okay grandma, you simpleton, the only possible way you could be looking up e-mail on Youtube is if you’d type ‘google’ into Google, so here’s three tutorials festooned with red arrows, and if you scroll past those it’s all brianrot. We’re the biggest search engine on god’s green earth and we can’t find shit.”

most of the good shows were written before most people knew anything about computers or the internet, plus we’ve all seen hacking in media and i don’t think we want them trying to write compelling electronic warfare even when the rest of the writing is acceptable.

some things that look dated like having an ensign carry a padd to the captain are actually good security, depending on the threat model.
