Is the joke that Asian kids are smarter than black kids?
Uhhhhhh…thats not what ebonics is.
The joke is that Asian kids still win the spelling bee even with different rules for spelling. SNL was playing on the stereotype.
So many of these Norm-era jokes are wild outside the (more racist, more misogynistic) context of the late 20th century.
It’s part of the criticism that Norm was just a regular comedian and not some comic genius. He had a good delivery but punched down too often to be comfortable.
In the 90’s, we thought it was. There wasn’t a way to look it up yet.
