WASHINGTON (AP) — The House passed legislation Thursday that would aid Ukraine and sanction key segments of the Russian economy, overriding objections from Republican leaders who warned the bill would undermine negotiations designed to achieve a comparable but stronger result.

The legislation, sponsored by Rep. Gregory Meeks, D-N.Y., seeks to cement U.S. assistance for Ukraine by providing more than $1 billion in security and reconstruction aid. It would make another $8 billion available for Ukraine’s defense through loans.

I’m already seeing on bluesky, in the discover tab, politicians saying how they voted to approve this bill.

    Then bragging about it.

Which, maybe it’s just me, but it comes off kinda weird. Imagine if I tweeted “I did the thing at work I’m expected to do! And for once I didn’t get bullied out of my position! Yeah! Go me!”

I’m all for sending Ukraine all the help they want. I just find it weird seeing politicians bragging about it hours after the innitial vote before we can see any actual results. Because you’re a fool if you think trump won’t be finding ways to make this vote mean nothing.

      agreed on all points

like, thank fuck the bill actually got passed, but the fact that it was a huge hurdle is incredibly fucked up

And the same members who stood with trump as he stripped Ukraine of any funding…now they’re seeing that russia is not winning this and they magically want to be on the winning side, while saying they supported our allies all along…

politicians always brag about voting for a popular bill. They are hoping you remember their name well next November and vote for them. Votes are more important than money in politics (at least if the voting is honest). Money is important mostly because it buys propaganda.
