From what I have heard, it’s more about cats liking to have free access to their territory. They don’t care that the garden and you house are an indoor/outdoor situation. They’re both part of cat’s territory and cat does not like to not be cut off from pat of his/her kingdom.
The only part of the equation where human fits in is that we are part of cat’s property and so cat is entitled to have access to hinanden at all times as well. We are territory.
When cats do that it’s because they expected you to follow them outside. They just wanted to roam around with their bud.
