Socialism puts the means of production in the hands of the workers.
Putting it in the hands of the state just consolidates power to the state and away from the one dude at the top of the company. Workers remain at the behest of a power outside of themselves.
The elephant would think that a government saying “hey, you have to give power to your employees” is the same as “we’re the government and we own a portion of your company” when they’re very different things. State capitalism and capitalism are far more compatible than even social democratic capitalism and capitalism. Outsourcing production to weaken the position of domestic labor to prevent actual socialism was far more important than fighting state capitalists that call themselves socialists.
