Hopefully you’ll never need to! They help me locate parts of my face when I look in a mirror, cause my fusiform gyrus largely went out with my second stroke few years ago. They’re a disability aid, not so much for style, but they have the added side benefit of being easy to distinguish.
Dunno if I’ve said it before, but it’s really cool that you share that. A lot of folks have no idea what kind of things can go on with the brain post stroke, so it’s awesome when people that have gone through it educate the rest of us. Helps break down barriers
I end up thinking of them as like the big giant thick nerd glasses the military used to hand out in the seventies, the thick black rims that no one likes; and then of the people I meet, some see the glasses and know what my brain’s been through and keep quiet, but once in a while someone says “whoa, those are cool!” and I end up replying something to the tune of “buddy, it’s like complementing crutches, shh.”
I’d have ordinary glasses if I could. At least I have them in a few colors.
I honestly thought it was a stylistic thing. They look cool/it looks intentional and artsy to me. I thought it was a playful eyebrow raise in glasses form, they’re fun. But I’m sorry to learn they’re from a not-so-fun source.
We used to call those thick glasses “BCGs” in the military - Birth Control Glasses. They were kind of in style when I served in the mid-aughts though, so I didn’t complain when mine were issued lol
Thanks for sharing! I’m interested to learn more - are glasses with this specifically sold to help people? Or do you always search for this particular frame style when getting new ones, because this shape helps you the most? I tried to search for more info based on what you said, but I wasn’t finding anything relevant.
It’s a little of both. Notched glasses can be worn by people who don’t derive medical benefit from them, but they help people with facial processing issues see their own faces in photos and mirrors. It’s not perfect, but it gives me a starting point.
If I wore those I’d spend so much time looking at that notch I’d permanently develop a lazy eye, like straight out of the movie The Jerk
