Soviet prisons were not the cartoonish idea of a “gulag,” and conditions varied from prison to prison, depending on severity of crime, etc. Some prisons were more progressive than western peers.
Prison reform in the US in the 1960s felt - for a brief instant - like a truly progressive force. Then Reaganism happened…
