PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•Valve adds CD-ROM drive support to Steam Frame kernel, took less than ten minutes — update comes one day after user requests for capability in the Steam Community forumEnglish
1·9 days agoAlso Steam acquired its user base in the first place by vendor lock-in on Quake mods. (Counter-Strike derived from Navy Seals Quake, Team Fortress was originally a Quake mod, and Half-Life is a Quake total conversion originally sold on a CD-ROM in a box.)

20·13 days agoThat he was not attractive the bible makes quite clear.
-
when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. (KJV)
-
He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. (NIV)

This quantum leap could be just the breakthrough Firefox needed to set event coordinates during HTML 5 mouse drag events.

3·16 days agoThe most valuable position in the market right now is as a substitute of search enginesm
The second most valuable position in the market is as a tool to speed up work for already skilled people.
I perceive them as having equal value. In each case the technology is forced on users in a top-down way and results in worse outcomes.
I don’t expect you’ll agree; that’s not the same as what I wrote being “Not really true.”

9·16 days agoThat is true but does not pertain to what I wrote.
To be more precise, LLMs’ present valuation in the market is not based on their being a skill so much as the end of skill.

18·16 days agoThe problem with “LLM requires skill to use correctly.” is that LLM’s are not being sold as a skill but rather the end of skill.

There is likewise no way to tell, just by examining code, that it was not plagiarized.

31·16 days agoAI has fundamentally changed how you do CS in industry, it’s completely unavoidable at this point and not using it in some capacity is doing yourself a massive disservice
If it was in truth inevitable then there would be no need to constantly shriek “It is inevitable!”
There is also evidence that deferring critical thinking to an LLM causes cognitive atrophy.

Honor that needs to be enforced is not honor. It is something less.

1·1 month agoIndeed, and “It is what it is.” and “It’s one of those things.” and “It has come to this.” and other such substantive axioms.
My previous reply was not to deny the fact of his presidency. It was to take exception to the notion that he is “the average joe in America” when he was rejected by America’s average joe at least three times as often as not.
In times past losing a presidential election spelled the end for a candidate’s presidential ambitions but for some reason the adjudicated rapist seems heedless of the electorate’s “No.”

A lot of people don’t seem to understand that Steam is DRM.
No one wanted to use Steam when it was released and the only reason anyone did is vendor lock-in on copies of Half-Life that were purchased at retail with no mention of Steam until Valve altered the bargain.
Some “innovation” to force people to use your service to keep playing a game they already purchased.
