A lot of the time, the story is necessary to make the porn work! There’s a reason why fanfiction writers use characters from another work instead of inventing new ones for their smut.
And TBH, many porn artists aren’t that good at porn, or it’s just not the kind of porn I’m into. Depending on the porn-to-story ratio and the quality of the story, I might very well read a smutty work for the story.
I feel like the porn part has to be at least reasonably good though, a good story with bad porn is just annoying because you can’t really talk about it with others.
Being able to talk about it is very low on my list of priorities when choosing to read or watch something. Also, there are several possible reasons for why I might not like a porn scene - it might not be well-executed, I might not be into the artist’s style, it might focus on fetishes I’m not into, it might even be too unethical - though if it’s too unethical to enjoy, the story has to be really good to make up for that.
And I mean, this isn’t actually an uncommon problem - sex scenes are part of many popular movies and TV shows, and it seems like quite a few people don’t care about those scenes but watch the movie/series anyway. See Game of Thrones, though IMO the sex scenes in GoT tended to be better-integrated from a narrative and stylistic POV than in many other works. You could still talk about GoT with lots of people because it was wildly popular and there was plenty of story to talk about.

I found my people!
The story is what takes it from just “people fucking” to something more!
