• Ugh. Same.

Watching instruction videos and following along only gets me so far before I break down in tears and can’t do anymore…

I can’t even practice around my partner because I’m too self conscious.

Yeah this is the worst part. I really just don’t have the time or space in my home to be able to consistently voice train privately. There’s always someone around and I just can’t bring myself to do it in front of anyone.

I’m not trans and I need to do voice training for a medical condition that affects my voice. I also think like this every time I try to talk.

I literally just started watching vids on YouTube and going along. Like, there really is such a huge wealth of info out there, it’s worth just finding a set of videos you like and sticking to it.

Yeah I’ve been hoarding these videos, saving them on my phone. The main problem is actually getting started.
Like others have said, listening my own voice makes me feel dysphoric and embarassed. I lose my motivation before even trying.
Also I have executive dysfunction because of my ADHD, and it makes the mental barrier even lager.

Noise cancelling headphones? Not sure if you need to hear your own voice for it to work, but it could even help for practice

It’s hard to keep the motivation thought. I have a more feminine voice now but no passing yet 🥲

SLT here. For what it’s worth, it helps to have an expert - a voice coach or an SLT - look over your shoulder and give you some guidance. If you’re inexperienced with voice training, you could develop unphysiological voice habits that are hard to get rid of, possibly even leading to hyperfunctional dysphonia. It helps to watch videos on this by ftm or mtf people who are experienced but this is likely not a substitute for a professional given that they don’t necessarily know voice physiology.

Here in Germany, you could even have this covered for you by insurance if your reasoning is sound and your phoniatrician knows what they’re doing. Not sure about other countries.

Whichever way you go though, better to start sooner than later, I’d wager. Voice is so deeply personal to each and every one of us and it’s like a little window to our souls. The sooner you work on this, the sooner you get comfortable with yourself, your own identity, with your body changing towards who you really are.

    You got this 💜
