Shouldn’t she be saying yes, and then it shows him flip it down? Maybe I’m confused, I haven’t played that game in several decades

He’s trying to guess what she’s thinking about. She says it’s not necessary. He flips down “food”. This reveals nothing about her attitude towards food, only about his.

The array of flippable pictures is specific to each player and tracks their knowledge of what has been ruled out.

It tripped me up at first, too, but @[email protected] is correct. Here’s the breakdown:

        Stalin: Is it necessary?
        Girl: No.
Stalin must now remove things from the board that are necessary in his opinion.
Stalin: *removes food* (which implies it’s necessary)

If the girl said “Yes”, then Stalin would have to remove the things from the board that aren’t necessary in his opinion, for instance, food.

If the joke is meant to be that Stalin does not think food is necessary, then he would not flip down food when the girl says no
