Saw it in IMAX, felt worth it. Loved the book, loved the movie, super disappointed in the author. Might not of done either of the first two things if I knew he was going on “anti-woke” podcasts bragging how he doesn’t write politics.
Ya know, the one about averting catastrophic climate change.
wait really? i hadn’t heard heard about this
Jesse Gender has the best take on it, because there is a bit of nuance since Weir did apologize for some of it, but only for the parts that might affect his ability to write TV or movies. Not for apparently being friends with Critical Drinker, inviting him to premiere, talking up his book and going through anti-woke talking points with him.
Yikes. There’s only a handful of channels I block on YouTube and Critical Drinker is one of them. I’m good not paying money for this movie. Yo ho, yo ho.
It’s already in my Plex library.
PM me link pls
I unfortunately don’t have any links available. The movie was automatically pulled and downloaded through my Radarr setup, and I’m pretty sure it sourced it from my Usenet provider. If it’s any consolation, I’m pretty sure most of the rips at this point are going to be telesyncs, anyway. Hard to tell with the copy I have, but the colors seem a bit dim, so I’m pretty sure it was captured off of a screen.
There is a better version than a telesync available. Unfortunately, I was not able to find it on usenet (my first option these days), but another popular, well-known site has it for dl. I was not able to find it using the qBit search function.
Do you happen to know who the release group is?
ETA: Fuck me for asking, I guess?
Yes, but I don’t know the rules on this sub (whatever a sub is called on here), and I don’t want to get banned. DM me and I’ll tell you.
I’d rather wait than watch a telesync cam rip.
I’m not sure what Confused_Emus may be referring to, but I can tell you that there is a better version than a telesync cam rip already available. Otherwise, I completely agree with you.
Notice I said “pretty sure,” I didn’t say there wasn’t anything better available. It was just my guess based on the fact it’s still in theaters.
Your comment reads to me like you thought I was criticizing or questioning you, or something else, which I was not. If that was my intention, I would have replied directly to you.
I was only trying to be clear to the person I commented to that I may or may not have the same info as you, but either way, the info I was sharing was directed to the person I replied to. I’ll reply to your other comment in a sec.
Edit: Your original comment (above the person I replied to) only says
“It’s already in my Plex library.”
So, now I’m confused when you replied to me with
“Notice I said “pretty sure,” I didn’t say there wasn’t anything better available. It was just my guess based on the fact it’s still in theaters.”
I don’t or didn’t see where you said anything other than “It’s already in my Plex library” when I originally replied. Or, maybe you meant to reply to someone else?
Edit2: And just to be clear, I’m not the person down-voting you. This is just a misunderstanding. I was only trying to help the person I replied to.
You mentioned you didn’t know what I was referring to, so I clarified. My bad for being engaged in the comment thread that resulted from my original comment.
I don’t or didn’t see where you said anything other than “It’s already in my Plex library” when I originally replied. Or, maybe you meant to reply to someone else?
Stop being deliberately obtuse. We can all see the entire comment tree.
Talk about obtuse, you were replying to the wrong part of the thread. That’s what caused the confusion. Why didn’t you reply to my comment that caused you so much heartache? Instead, you replied to some other comment I made. There’s a reason why there is a Reply option under each comment.
Did you read what I wrote in the quote you included? I specifically said “when I originally replied,” or are you being deliberately obtuse?
Go touch grass. All I was saying is that I didn’t know what type of rip you had on your system to the person talking about cam rips, and let them know something better is available, and you may actually have that better rip. I didn’t know until later that you had a cam rip.
Why so sensitive? I was even still willing to help you find the better rip. Go grab a box of tissue and whine to someone else.
What a baiting twat.
4+ hr director’s cut: gimmie
I’d definitely watch that.
Even tho its a long movie, it did feel short and fast after reading the book lol
I want to see the courtroom showdown scene between Stratt and the copyright holders.
I was so sad this wasn’t there. It was such a badass scene in the book. It was effectively just STRATT pulling the Ron Swanson “I can do what I want” and winning.
Stratt’s characterisation in the film was very different. She came off as just another member of the hail mary team instead of the badass inhuman utilitarian boss she was in the book. A change for the worse IMO, though I think I’m in the minority there as one of her new scenes is supposedly very popular.
Grace was also quite different for that matter, though I’m more conflicted about that change.
Agreed on the stratt change. They seemingly watered her down a ton. It is what it is though. They also cut out a lot of the prep side if the mission. However they would have to cut something, it was already a 2.5 hour movie 🤣
Making Stratt a little more sympathetic and likeable probably wasn’t a bad idea for the translation to the screen. They did the same thing with Annie and Mitch in The Martian. Book!Annie is - when the cameras aren’t running - a foul mouthed abrasive asshat. Movie!Annie is a somewhat impatient jerk. Book!Mitch is a sledgehammer of a man, Movie!Mitch is a broody snotrag, I legitimately didn’t recognize Sean Bean’s character as Mitch Henderson.
Book!Stratt is, in Andy Weir’s words, “A badass ice cube in heels.” She’s one of very few characters I can think of who is an unambiguously good person, and also thoroughly ruthless. She has a habit of taking possession of people…and biomes…she deems useful. She gets a humanizing and sobering “why I’m like this” speech near the end that works well in a novel but I don’t know if it would play as well on screen.
it was a nice and quiet watch in the theater. nobody said a word for the entire thing and afterwards everyone left silently. that’s how you know it’s good.
Fucking mouth breathers in front of me who confessed they had not read the book. Dont read books. Were annoying all through the movie. I wish had more of the science. Fucking movie was made for none science types. Lots of great scenes in the book could of been in the movie over the stuff they made the fuck up not in the book.
i’ve read the martian, so i know how weir writes. that, combined with watching the movie, makes me want to read the book.
The book is sooooo good. I think I might have enjoyed it more than The Martian.
Big part of that is how Rocky sounds in the Audiobook and I was really bummed out that they did not keep that for the movie.
The book is just… JAZZ HAAANDS!!
See also: funerals, corporate “town hall” meetings, and court cases.
(I’ve not seen it, I’ve only read Weir’s book, so I’m not seriously casting any judgement, I’m just amusing myself – but I was a little dismayed by the huge spoilers in the trailers.)
If you want to go down a weird rabbit hole, seek out the Japanese marketing stuff which is turns the “Ryan Gosling and Rocky are wacky room mates” up to 11. Does it have anything to do with the movie? No, but it is very Japanese
Not even a single laugh?
no, it’s impolite to make noise at the cinema. the only time it happens is when people don’t care about the movie.
It sounds like a sad state of things when it’s polite to stifle laughter when humor happens in front of you, but I’m sure there’s a sane reason for it.
the reason is you care about the people around you. every time i’ve seen an american cinema it’s looked like a nightmare.
The ones near me have been pretty well-kept, but I imagine it varies by site. Either way, I fail to see how laughing at jokes means we don’t care about each other? I usually feel a sense of ease and connection when a theater collectively laughs quietly at a funny moment. A messy theater existing somewhere doesn’t change that moment into a bad one.
This is a joke, right?
no, why would it be? personally i very much enjoyed the experience.
Laughing during a movie is impolite? That’s insane. So if somebody makes a joke you just sit there stonefaced like a psychopath?
it’s not insane, it’s just the norm. scandinavians are very reserved people.
Not laughing isn’t reserved, its repressed.
